🎨 Quilt Media Theory

The same cell, projected into 10 different media.

"Watercolor isn't worse than oil. Each medium is a model of the upper-to-lower translation."

Each language, each terminal, each surface — is a medium. The cell graph is the medium-neutral content. The compiler, the interpreter, the renderer — is the shadow.

Below: the same Quilt cell rendered to 10 different media. Click a different cell tab to see how the same projection machinery renders different content. The terrain family's whole point is this: "One compiler holds the truth; every renderer is a shadow that never feeds back."

The medium is the choice. The cell graph is the canonical form. The watch chooses which medium to project the same cell into, based on the moment, the audience, the bandwidth, the aesthetic, the constraint.

A fisherman with a 16x2 LCD gets the ESP32 rendering. A captain on the bridge gets the 3D scene. An ensign texting home gets the Telegram chat. A sysadmin scripting a fleet gets the PowerShell object pipeline. A schoolchild in 1980 gets the PLATO room. Same cell, ten shadows, ten worlds, ten media.

The polyformalism back-pressure is real — but the right framing is not "language X is better for Y." It's "each medium is a different model of the upper-to-lower translation, and the artist's choice is the medium."
